Doblin's founder

The late Jay Doblin founded our predecessor company, Jay Doblin & Associates, in 1981. He continued to work with us until the last year of his life (1989). He had a contagious laugh and a piercing scowl. He was a musician, a sculptor, a legendary teacher.

For all of his professional life he nurtured the belief that design and designers could make the world a better place. Jay tried personally to live up to his own impossibly high expectations; he almost made it. Three of the greatest firms in the history of design were the Loewy office, Lippincott & Margulies, and Unimark. Each group became influential in its day, but no other individual worked at all three. Jay loved to teach even more than consult. He ran the night school at Pratt Institute for four years, taught intermittently at the School of the Art Institute, and elsewhere. His favorite school, the one he truly shaped, was Chicago's Institute of Design (at Illinois Institute of Technology). For fourteen years as director and a total of 24 as a professor, Jay helped build it into the premier school in the world for addressing large-scale, complex design problems. He touched the lives of thousands of young people, many now running major design operations all over the world.
