Senior Manager in Design Research

Position Summary

Doblin is looking to hire an experienced design researcher 
to join our growing practice in Toronto.

Doblin Toronto helps leading companies and public sector organizations to care deeply about their customers and users, in order to design and innovate. We are especially interested in hearing from researchers with a background in ethnography, UX research, service design, or other research roles that involve developing empathy for participants. Design researchers at Doblin bring their curiosity, empathy, interpretive, and storytelling skills to bear on all aspects of our work—from framing an innovation challenge to designing new propositions and testing prototypes with users. Our research is pragmatic and applied, enabling us to design, build, and act with intent. Crucially, you will help build alliances between our team, our clients, and the customers and citizens we seek to serve.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Designing, planning and executing user research and the articulation of each stage of decision making, from research, to development and iteration, testing, and refinement
  • Collaborating with designers, strategists, and technologists to turn insights from research into solutions to business and social challenges
  • Advocating for the value of user research, and bringing client organizations along the discovery journey
  • Analyzing and synthesizing data, and communicating research insights in compelling and immersive ways
  • Supporting and leading client-facing conversations that may challenge established perspectives on their markets and customers
  • Contributing to Doblin’s expertise and tradecraft in design research

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate these characteristics:

  • 5 years of relevant research experience in applied role, such as design researcher, UX researcher, or market researcher, ideally with client or stakeholder management
  • Graduate degree in a human science such as: sociology, anthropology, psychology, with methodological focus on qualitative research. Bonus points for familiarity with quantitative methods.
  • A passion for learning and a natural curiosity about humans and what they do, complemented by a theoretical grounding in human behavior
  • Comfortable with typical qualitative methods (e.g., experience conducting interviews and ethnographic observations), ethical considerations, and project management
  • Ability to distill qualitative insights into design recommendations, to tell stories about those recommendations in ways designers can use, but based on traditional qualitative analytical rigor.
  • The ability to work in dynamic conditions, and transition quickly between collaborative and individual work
  • Compelling written and spoken communication skills
  • Strong planning, organization and documentation skills
  • An interest in diverse perspectives and approaches, and the ability to quickly dive into a new domain or process
  • A collaborative nature, drawing motivation from effective teamwork
  • The practiced ability to link the design process and its outcomes to the larger strategy of the organization, linking the design work to other streams of work, and to the overall organizational model / business case
